Notifications are good to keep up with social network activity. You are continuously being updated upon receving comments or +1s, on the post you shared. Google+ allows to receive such notifications via Email alerts. If you are little bit active on Google+, then the ratio of notification email alerts is high and your inbox is flooded with the alert mails which might distract you. One can easily manage such notifications using filtering the emails that are being sent from Google+.
We all know how Google dominates in the searching anything on the web. Gmail inherits the power of searching from Google. There are many options to search a single mail in different ways. One can filter mails using different attributes like From, To, Subject, Includes word, Doesn't have, Has attachment, etc.
Let's explore, how elegantly we can filter out Google+ notification emails. There are 3 ways to create filter in gmail inbox. Let's analyze them, one by one.
1. Filter using Google+ keyword
This is the simplest way, but not the efficient one. Google+ keyword might come into the email which doesn't belong to the Google+.
See the following screenshot from my inbox. It has Google+ keyword but it doesn't belong to google plus.
For example, your friend mails you - "Hey, please share the party pics on Google+". Alas, this mail will surely get filtered out as a google+ notification though it's not! It is better to use some other way.
2. Filter using the "From" field
Let's filter out the google+ notification alerts using the "From" attribute. This type of filter matches the sender address with the provided address in the "From" attribute. If the sender's address or address pattern gets matched, it will be filtered out.
Create a filter as *@plus.google.com and apply the appropriate label, like Google+. Here, * means anything before @ will be ignored and will be filtered as google+ notification.
Have you observed the above screenshot? See the last highlighted mail - actually it is my chat history from Google+! Your all chats on either Gmail or Google+ will be stored in Gmail. So, we can say that, this is not the perfect way, too!
3. Filter using Plus Addressing Scheme
Plus addressing scheme is one of the powerful feature of Gmail. Filtering mail this way is the sure shot to the aforementioned problems. If you are not aware with the same please go through it once. Now, let's analyze this approach.
Follow the below steps to filter alert mails using plus addressing scheme.
Step 1: Go to settings page google+
Step 2: Navigate to the Notification Delivery section to add your existing email address with plus address. I've added a mail address as <my_mail_id>+firstname.lastname@example.org to receive all notifications.
Once you add your existing id with plus addressing you will get confirmation mail in your gmail inbox. Once you confirm the same, your address will be used as notification delivery for all future notifications.
Step 3: You're almost done. Create a filter in your inbox using "To" attribute with the address you entered on Google+. See the below screenshots.
That's all! Your all notification emails that only belong to Google+ will be filtered and labeled as per your filter.
